He might have been lucky, but his girlfriend and boyfriend weren't - Jade and Pink Dave were both still trapped on Sacrosanct. So, he kept returning on every raid, trying to save them. Eventually the inevitable happened, though, and he was captured and brought to Hypatia.
Sollux had made his code nigh impossible to hack without permission, but Hypatia had a lot of time and patience. It took a long time, but finally she cracked into his code. By then, of course, the constant prodding and experimentation had practically worn away his personality, and Hypatia's repurposing did not help with that. Now he's her loyal soldier, with no thoughts beyond obedience. His mind is still there, but dormant and hidden under layers and layers of reprogramming.
