The close call he had some time ago not only made him completely wary of what he did, but it made him think much of what he was doing. He knew he could reach out to Gamzee. It was small in the way he had before, but he knew he was in there. Somewhere.
He tried small tactics. Calling out to the edge of the tunnel and then leaving, leaving food with notes (though he figured that he wouldn't even read the notes he left), even leaving horns and such at the entrance... just doing just little things before he could even see the beast get close. He was wary, but he tried to reach out to him in the ways he could.
This time, he came with food and a few familiar objects that the subjuggulator had seen before. He was giving up his meal to try to see if he could rationalize with a beast. It was going to be such a slim chance, and he had no way of really absconding this time, but fuck it all.
He was going to do this or he was going to die, and he accepted this... much to his own dismay. He enters the tunnel he lurks most again, ready to do this.
