He can't remember how many times it was. Five? Six? He'd lost count of how many times he'd died here already. It never got any easier, walking from the teleporter and noticing something was off. Sometimes the mutations would wear away after a few days, other times they stuck around until he died again, just to be replaced by something equally hideous.

This time he hadn't even bothered attempting to complete the objective he'd set out to do, once he walked through the teleporter and emerged on the otherside with a pair of ridiculously large, ultimately useless, russet feathered wings. He simply returned to base, defeated, sending Carter a message to let him know he was back. He could figure out later how long he'd been out and just what had happened. For now ...

He wandered back to his room, catching hew new mutation on doorways and light fixtures, which just made matters worse. Finally getting to his room, he sat himself on his bed; he had to hug the edge so the damned wings hung over the side. He pulled a pillow to his chest, brought his knees up, and rocked.

Goddamn station.
