BRO Y U DO THIS TO HIM okay so Emile was one of the few Spartans he liked and was beginning to trust, because Emile's attitude is actually pretty standard Marine tough guy aggressiveness and O'Brien is familiar with that, and Emile treated him like a fellow soldier instead of giving him the helpless 'you are a normal
uselesshuman and do you even go here' looks. O'Brien understands team insularity but the Spartans really take it to an extreme level, and he hates, HATES the idea that they all think of him like a kid who wandered in and is bothering all the adults. Emile took him in stride, and went out of his way to be kind to O'Brien when he was being crazy and PTSD, and O'Bri kind of felt like Emile was keeping his 'secret.' The one where he's bugfuck nuts from ptsd and is trying to atone for getting a Spartan killed even though he doesn't really like Spartans and they freak him out blah blah. To O'Brien there are three kinds of people in the world: the ones that would just let him be when he's locked himself in a room and is having a meltdown, the ones that would mock him for it, or the ones that kick the door in because they actually give a shit. The third variety is pretty rare in O'Brien's experience, and it was never something he expected to see in a Spartan.Also, Emile is that hypermasculine ideal that O'Brien thinks is pretty awesome, and idolizes a little, so the BIG REVELATION about emile and jorge made him throw a tantrum and get frightened and pissed off and now he's mad at Emile for "betraying him." Emile was just starting to migrate into a 'safe' category with Rookie and Cortez and his former team, all of whom are people that he's become accustomed to their behavior and reactions and basically is sure that they're not going to turn on him. Now Emile is back to being in the scary unpredictable unsafe category, and he's really butthurt about that.
He might be a little attracted to Emile, since the interest Emile takes in O'Brien mirrors Cal's interest, and O'Brien doesn't have the emotional maturity to untangle how he feels about Cal, about Spartans in general, or about strong, confident, attractive and highly successful male military heroes who are everything he wants to be.no subject
