MMM ROOKIE okay Rookie confuses O'Brien on such a massive level that he doesn't even know how to begin handling it. Rookie is a fellow ODST, which is good, but a superior officer, which is bad, but he's really nice, which is good, but sometimes he's too nice, which is bad, and he's good at job and attractive and confident and is everything you could ask for in a squadmate, which is good, but he's also all those things next to O'Brien's failure self, which is bad, and the list goes on and on. O'Brien would be an entirely different person if he had served earlier with people more like Rookie, and had his attitudes shaped by them, but O'Brien clings to oldschool beliefs about machismo and intolerance in an attempt to protect himself. Under these beliefs, Rookie is soft or some kind of anomaly with his compassion and patience and willingness to talk things out instead of reaching for his gun, but he's also apparently highly successful with all this behavior. Rookie gets beautiful women, he seems to get along with the Spartans, they don't treat him like a retarded puppy, he's basically doing a lot of things that O'Brien would like to be doing. So part of him is jealous, part of him desperately wants to learn how Rookie manages to be different without getting beaten half to death for it, and part of him VERY DEEPLY BURIED understands that the opinion of a person like Rookie is more important than the opinion of an oldschool soldier type. Rookie seems to have a strong moral compass, and O'Brien wants to earn his favor because that would be important. Possibly more important than getting bent out of shape over men sleeping with men. MAYBE. The idea of Rookie being disappointed with him honestly upsets him, but some bad habits are ingrained.

He trusts Rookie more than anyone else on the station, which in this case is still holding him at arm's length most of the time because O'Brien is a paranoid little shit who doesn't trust anyone at all ever. He distrusts his own feelings about Rookie as well, as half of him wants to spend more time with Rookie cos he's cool, and the other half wants to be him. And another part of O'Brien wants to believe that Rookie is right about a lot of things, that no one would really care if he slipped up and acted ~different~, and that somehow, someway, it would be okay if Rookie pushed him very firmly against a wall one day and kissed him until he couldn't breath.

BLAH BLAH Rookie's in the safe category right now, although he was out of it for a little while when O'Bri found out that he's apparently a-okay with bicurious stuff, but since Rookie has overtly slept with women and generally continued to act like a completely normal guy who patiently puts up with O'Brien's crap, he's back in the safe zone. O'Bri's pretty sure Rookie is just too nice to turn on him.

Also Rookie is totally hot okay and O'Brien thinks all you handsy ladies need to step off B|
