of course you do C:

Sam scares him. End of line. He's a Spartan who radiates weirdness with his age and his rank and his statements about being a superior officer sounded to O'Brien like 'lol Carter got rid of you' which tap into his complex about being useless/unnecessary, and just generally Sam managed to do every single thing to put O'Brien off-balance and defensive. Which isn't Sam's fault because everything he said was legit, and are all probably things that O'Brien has gotten in trouble for before.

AND THEN THE KID WANTS TO FIGHT HIM OH GOD STRANGER DANGER there's literally nothing more terrifying to him than imagining being pinned down and disabled by a Spartan. He's gotten over most of the rumor-fueled assumptions that Spartans might wig out and kill someone at a moment's notice, but rumors always start somewhere. Maybe most importantly, Sam really brought to light an issue that's been bothering O'Brien for a while, which is that O'Brien is not part of any of these teams. They are insular teams and he is not on them and they don't really want or need him there and they don't know what to do with him, and he hates all of it.

ON THE OTHER HAND, now that he's heard Emile's story about the IIIs being war orphans, he feels guilty for flying off the handle at someone who has already lost so much at a young age, but when he gets pushed off balance the defensive instincts cut in with insults and snark and dehumanizing the Spartans.

SAM WOULD BE FINE WITH O'BRIEN BEING ONE OF THE GANG IF HE WASN'T SUCH A JERK ALL THE TIME

no but seriously it's probably good that o'brien doesn't show pity or anything because then sam would puff up and be all "I DON'T NEED YOUR PITY I'M A BIG STRONG MAN D8< " and what have you.

and also because he's still completely and thoroughly brainwashed into thinking being kidnapped at six to become an hero is a noble thing to do.

SO BASICALLY. THEY PISS EACH OTHER OFF BECAUSE OF UNDERLYING ISSUES THEY MAY OR MAY NOT BE AWARE THEY EVEN HAVE.

Yyyyeah that conversation if it ever happens won't go over well. O'Brien would be horrified and probably get mad if Sam told him it was the right/glorious/necessary thing to do, because no KIDNAPPING CHILDREN IS ALWAYS WRONG HOW CAN YOU THINK THAT WAS OKAY WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU etc. And then they'd be pissed at each other all over again!

Also Sam needs to find out about Cal so there are even more things to fight about.

And yes, underlying issues foreverrrrrrrrr oh by the way did O'Brien ever tell you that he went through a period of being a crazy roof sniper who was talking to hallucinations of Cal and taking orders from her. SUCH STERLING SOLDIER MATERIAL HERE, AMIRITE.

i think that means we should make that conversation happen then. because o'brien is completely and totally right on that but sam is SO INCREDIBLY BRAINWASHED

AND YES HE DOES, OH MY GOD I WANT HIM TO FIND OUT ABOUT CAL SO BAD

no he didn't and he would be very interested to hear how crazy you are, o'brien. very interested indeed.
