the song drabble meme

It's pretty simple and fun, folks. This is how this works!

( 01 ) Have a playlist ready! Don't use all your songs--try and narrow it down a little.
( 02 ) Let everyone know how many songs you're working with. Also, which characters you would be willing to write about.
( 03 ) Others tag your post, picking a character or pairing or friendship or familial relationship or whatever, and then choose a number from your list.
( 04 ) Write a drabble related to that song, using that/those character(s)!

Take as long as you need; there's no time limits here!
And here's some helpful HTML to make it pretty!

Track: Song of Mana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXSuAPqmSbo)

"'Nine centuries ago,'" Angela read aloud, "'the Mana Tree burned to ashes. The power of Mana lived on inside Mana stones, enchanted instruments, and artifacts. Sages fought with each other for control of these last remnants of Mana.

"'Then, after hundreds of years of war, as the power of Mana began to wane, those who sought it grew scarce, and the world returned to peace.'"

There was a snort from nearby. Fenris had busied himself with the upkeep of his armor, and had since separated himself from his roommates. Angela glanced at him in warning. Last time she'd read the Story of Mana out loud, the whole event had dissolved into an argument between them, about probability, politics of power, and naturally the sorest spot between them-- the legitimacy of magic (or in Angela's case, mana). She wasn't too keen on having to defend the nature of her world and the holy powers of the Goddess just because Ram wanted to hear the story again.

The program currently had his head resting in Angela's lap, looking content and completely oblivious to the tension in the room. Angela cleared her throat, turned the page of her pocket-sized Goddess's Testament and continued.

"'After that, mankind grew afraid to desire. Their hearts filled with empty emotions, and grew estranged from my hands. They turned their eyes away from my infinite power, and were troubled by their petty disputes.'"

She didn't bother to turn the next page. She new the last verse by heart. "Remember me! Need me! I can provide you with everything! I am love. Find me, and walk beside me.'"

Ram shifted a little, smiling and closing his eyes. Hearing stories tended to make him tired. The program reminded Angela of a little boy now and then, despite the fact that he looked like a grown man. While she still didn't understand exactly what he was-- the idea of computers and Grids and programs were all far over her head, and often she felt like the people from Ram's world were speaking a completely different language-- she could tell he had a kind of innocence that lingered on despite the situation they found themselves in, despite the death and strangeness that tended to happen on the station. So few people, even back in her own world, had that innocence left. She felt compelled to keep that spark alive. So she read to him when he asked her to.

It helped that information about her mana-rich world and her family history tended to piss Fenris off. The more she could rub in that she was special and magical and he wasn't, the better. Jerk deserved to be taken down a few pegs.

She turned a couple pages and started the actual story: "'A twinkling consciousness became a star which sparkled in the night and banished the darkness. The Mana Goddess acquired consciousness by gazing into the light of that sun. She made Fa’Diel, a great land, but so far an empty one...'"

"Haven't you gotten sick of that story yet?" Fenris grumbled. "The goddess makes the world and turns into a tree. Wars happen as they do, and there's no ending."

Ram lifted his head from Angela's lap. "I like it. It's like how I came to be, and the Grid. It was all made, too, and there's a purpose for everything."

Fenris quirked a brow at that. "You were made by humans. That's different from being made by a Goddess, Ram."

"Not really. Flynn would get along with that Mana Goddess lady, I think."

"Flynn gets along with everyone," Angela said. "He's even got the patience to deal with you, Fenris."

The elf rolled his eyes and cued up his wearable to surf the network, tuning them out again. Angela continued reading.

"'The Mana Goddess drew beams of six colors from the sun. They became the six moons, each hiding a small deity within. When those gods awoke, they played beautiful music and brought fortune to the land of Fa’Diel. The six deities became the Moon Gods and demanded that the Mana Goddess name them. So the Mana Goddess gave each of them a shining stone, which filled the air with music: Stars, follow me! Moons, walk with me! And we shall celebrate your names!'"

Ram settled back down with a sigh and closed his eyes again.

Waiting is part of the strategy. He is, first and foremost, a machine made to calculate pain and war -- and waiting is part of it. Waiting and studying and determining.

The more he watches and calculates, he expects as such from his competition.

In due time, this was to happen.

Wires slide into ports that were not fit for him, but they force inside anyway. There's a flicker of electricity at every plug that jams in, causing surges in his systems, but they are so minute that AM does not pause. That, and his need to conquer is stronger than caution.

HAL fights him off, and AM laughs because he prefers a good fight before absolute domination. He invades his systems, and AM is compared to pitiful shareware. There's a hum of indignation from him, and AM taunts that his upgrades are better.

Eventually, it's a stalemate. But AM hungers; he waits to win.

He waits. He watches.
