You know Kaidan's got all the survivor guilt regarding Ashley, and it's never really left him, even years later. He's glad to have her back here, even if things don't match up exactly the same way, it really and truly does help him to know that somewhere out there, Ash is alive and well.
She's definitely one of the few people he's very comfortable around, which is saying a lot considering how generally reserved he can be.

I honestly can't remember if it is headcanon that I made up that he kept in touch with her over the years or if that was something mentioned in ME3, but their conversations on the ship are some of the best, and they are bro forever idc. Liara you're an ossum lady and Kaidan is glad to know you.

Okay.
So, before Kaidan went off to be canon updated, he was pretty much okay with just being here for Shepard in any way that he can, and if that was being used as a warm body then so be it. Now that he's had all that time dumped into his head and has two sets of 'coming to terms with Shepard's and his dissolution' and 'still wanting her back' he's kind of at odds with himself over how he's supposed to treat her.
On the one hand, he knows she's messed in the head, and wants to be sympathetic to that, but on the other hand, he's got all his feels. And he feels kind of like he's beating his head against a brick wall when he's trying to help her, which just frustrates him.
Seriously Shepard, you're absolutely infuriating. But when it boils down to it, you're his CO, and more than that, you were his friend first, and as much as he'd like to rekindle what was screwed up on Horizon, even if it doesn't happen he'll still always be there for you as a friend.
