Broken Elevator Meme!

...Yeah.

Your character is riding on an elevator when - oh no - it breaks down and stops! How unexpected.
Oh look, someone else is in there with them. How about that.
That elevator isn't going to move until your thread amasses at least ten comments. MAYBE MORE.
Commence arguing/going stir-crazy/making out to relieve the tension/all of the above.
Agree to never speak of this again (and just use the stairs in future).

[He projects up a sequence of blue and white lights that, he thinks, they should display.]

[Sarah moves to do so alarmingly fast and without question. She stares into the wiring for a very long time before finally accepting what she sees.]

[There's one of his small electronic sighs.]

Understood. If pressed, do they light up? It is necessary to create this pattern to proceed.

[okay, she can deal with this. Deep breaths, Sarah.]

[He observes her for a few moments to see which light up.]

Thank you. I have determined the correct order - please deactivate all lights and inform me when you are ready.

[man you better be right about this, Delta]

[And he'll flash the lights in sequence slow enough for her to follow clearly, but quick enough that it's not insulting her intelligence.]

[Sarah follows the sequence carefully, looking as if she expects the panel to (literally) blow up in her face at any second.

When she finishes, she waits a beat, as if hoping the elevator will surge back to life immediately.

She just glances at Delta when it doesn't, wordlessly.]

[Oh right, that's his cue.

He sends in some activation signals and it starts to rumble promisingly.]

[Sarah heaves a sigh of relief, pushing herself up to her feet.]

[finger poised over the button, waiting]

In theory, yes.

[He's better at fixing things than York, okay?]

[Sarah presses the button, apprehensively...and relaxes immensely when the elevator starts to move again, as if nothing at all had happened.]

Christ.

[there's a long, awkward pause.]

[n-not quite looking at him]

It is nothing. My apologies that you were present for the malfunction. [Even if he had nothing to do with it.]

[Even Sarah knows that's not fair.]

[No worries, it's just his way of being polite.]

I will request a maintenance crew to prevent this from happening again.

[all the awkward fidgeting as the elevator slowly takes them to their destination. Sh-she was kind of being a jerk just now, wasn't she.]

[If Sarah knew Tex very well, she'd know Delta was perfectly used to jerks. Really, York was about the only one who ever treated him nicely.]

[Sarah glances uncertainly in Delta's direction. Is he trying to be patronizing, or...]

I wanted to get things moving again as much as you did.

[Not really, he's just insubstantial in areas without a ton of projectors.]

Unfortunately, many systems appear to be designed to limit non-tactile functionality. There is little I may do on my own.

[Sarah just kind of grunts in acknowledgement, and tactfully doesn't share her opinion that maybe that's a good thing.

Not preventing Delta specifically from being to do much by himself, necessarily. But keeping AI in general from jumping into the computer systems and screwing around with them?

Yeah, she doesn't have a problem with that.]

[If there weren't tons of robo-bodies around for the jacking, that might actually be true. It was probably intended by the original residents to keep a modicum of control for themselves, but like everything it can be worked around.]
