BRO Y U DO THIS TO HIM okay so Emile was one of the few Spartans he liked and was beginning to trust, because Emile's attitude is actually pretty standard Marine tough guy aggressiveness and O'Brien is familiar with that, and Emile treated him like a fellow soldier instead of giving him the helpless 'you are a normal
uselesshuman and do you even go here' looks. O'Brien understands team insularity but the Spartans really take it to an extreme level, and he hates, HATES the idea that they all think of him like a kid who wandered in and is bothering all the adults. Emile took him in stride, and went out of his way to be kind to O'Brien when he was being crazy and PTSD, and O'Bri kind of felt like Emile was keeping his 'secret.' The one where he's bugfuck nuts from ptsd and is trying to atone for getting a Spartan killed even though he doesn't really like Spartans and they freak him out blah blah. To O'Brien there are three kinds of people in the world: the ones that would just let him be when he's locked himself in a room and is having a meltdown, the ones that would mock him for it, or the ones that kick the door in because they actually give a shit. The third variety is pretty rare in O'Brien's experience, and it was never something he expected to see in a Spartan. Also, Emile is that hypermasculine ideal that O'Brien thinks is pretty awesome, and idolizes a little, so the BIG REVELATION about emile and jorge made him throw a tantrum and get frightened and pissed off and now he's mad at Emile for "betraying him." Emile was just starting to migrate into a 'safe' category with Rookie and Cortez and his former team, all of whom are people that he's become accustomed to their behavior and reactions and basically is sure that they're not going to turn on him. Now Emile is back to being in the scary unpredictable unsafe category, and he's really butthurt about that.
He might be a little attracted to Emile, since the interest Emile takes in O'Brien mirrors Cal's interest, and O'Brien doesn't have the emotional maturity to untangle how he feels about Cal, about Spartans in general, or about strong, confident, attractive and highly successful male military heroes who are everything he wants to be.no subject

He trusts Rookie more than anyone else on the station, which in this case is still holding him at arm's length most of the time because O'Brien is a paranoid little shit who doesn't trust anyone at all ever. He distrusts his own feelings about Rookie as well, as half of him wants to spend more time with Rookie cos he's cool, and the other half wants to be him. And another part of O'Brien wants to believe that Rookie is right about a lot of things, that no one would really care if he slipped up and acted ~different~, and that somehow, someway, it would be okay if Rookie pushed him very firmly against a wall one day and kissed him until he couldn't breath.
BLAH BLAH Rookie's in the safe category right now, although he was out of it for a little while when O'Bri found out that he's apparently a-okay with bicurious stuff, but since Rookie has overtly slept with women and generally continued to act like a completely normal guy who patiently puts up with O'Brien's crap, he's back in the safe zone. O'Bri's pretty sure Rookie is just too nice to turn on him.
Also Rookie is totally hot okay and O'Brien thinks all you handsy ladies need to step off B|

Rookie is not a backstabber, but he's more than okay with bicurious stuff. Marines get bored and lonely and horny too, bb, and it's okay to substitute a man if he's consenting. Which is why he'll only drag Obri into a corner for hot makeouts if he wants because Rook doesn't want to freak the poor guy out more than he has to.
Sob, this guy's too modern for This Man's Army.
Except for that when people gave him flak about being 'weak' he'd just beat the tar out them and go back to sleep right after. The secret to success is having a wicked left hook.

Also she's a girl but she's easier to talk to than most girls and he's not used to that, but hekindoflikesit. More girls should be easier to talk to. It would make his life so much easier.
Also, she's pretty. .\\\\.no subject
I WANT THEM TO BE BROS and derp around the Shephut together. She will tell him all about her adventures.

Because she seems to be a regular human and not a Spartan, he's actually way more inclined to show her proper military respect because people like her are familiar to him. SADLY he'll probably perform much better for her than for Carter. The general strangeness of her crew will outweigh the fifth wheel feeling he gets from the Spartans, because at least he knows he's not part of Shepard's military etc and is there only for his useful skills, and he's coming to the table with the only quality he takes pride in, his sharpshooting. Shepard doesn't know or care that he's considered spoiled because he's from Earth, or that he's gone through 238394 different squads because they all die and/or he can't get along with them. He gets a clean slate with her.
Also it bothers him more than he can articulate to suddenly be in the minority rather than the majority, and at least all the aliens aren't having stupid complicated inter-team sexual relations. You know aside from Shep and Garrus. That's still more conventional and acceptable to him.

And if she ever finds out they consider Earth kids spoiled she's just going to WTF-face at them for a very long time.
(Also we need to eventually do that whole he shoots at her and she lols about it thread thing. When you're not dying of busy.)

Sam scares him. End of line. He's a Spartan who radiates weirdness with his age and his rank and his statements about being a superior officer sounded to O'Brien like 'lol Carter got rid of you' which tap into his complex about being useless/unnecessary, and just generally Sam managed to do every single thing to put O'Brien off-balance and defensive. Which isn't Sam's fault because everything he said was legit, and are all probably things that O'Brien has gotten in trouble for before.
AND THEN THE KID WANTS TO FIGHT HIM OH GOD STRANGER DANGER there's literally nothing more terrifying to him than imagining being pinned down and disabled by a Spartan. He's gotten over most of the rumor-fueled assumptions that Spartans might wig out and kill someone at a moment's notice, but rumors always start somewhere. Maybe most importantly, Sam really brought to light an issue that's been bothering O'Brien for a while, which is that O'Brien is not part of any of these teams. They are insular teams and he is not on them and they don't really want or need him there and they don't know what to do with him, and he hates all of it.
ON THE OTHER HAND, now that he's heard Emile's story about the IIIs being war orphans, he feels guilty for flying off the handle at someone who has already lost so much at a young age, but when he gets pushed off balance the defensive instincts cut in with insults and snark and dehumanizing the Spartans.
no subject
no but seriously it's probably good that o'brien doesn't show pity or anything because then sam would puff up and be all "I DON'T NEED YOUR PITY I'M A BIG STRONG MAN D8< " and what have you.
and also because he's still completely and thoroughly brainwashed into thinking being kidnapped at six to become an hero is a noble thing to do.
SO BASICALLY. THEY PISS EACH OTHER OFF BECAUSE OF UNDERLYING ISSUES THEY MAY OR MAY NOT BE AWARE THEY EVEN HAVE.

Also Sam needs to find out about Cal so there are even more things to fight about.
And yes, underlying issues foreverrrrrrrrr oh by the way did O'Brien ever tell you that he went through a period of being a crazy roof sniper who was talking to hallucinations of Cal and taking orders from her. SUCH STERLING SOLDIER MATERIAL HERE, AMIRITE.
no subject
AND YES HE DOES, OH MY GOD I WANT HIM TO FIND OUT ABOUT CAL SO BAD
no he didn't and he would be very interested to hear how crazy you are, o'brien. very interested indeed.
